Data & sources

The index is an observed measurement of what AI assistants say about local businesses. Here is what the data covers, where it comes from, and how to use it.

What this data is

A weekly record of how AI assistants recommend and describe local businesses, first captured the week of Friday, July 17, 2026.

Every figure on this site is an observed measurement of what ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode said when asked real customer questions about a market. We record which businesses each assistant names, how prominently, and how well it can answer follow-up questions about them.

Nothing here is submitted by a business, and nothing is Courtyard's own rating. The data is what the AI said, on the date it said it.

  • 50 markets: each a metro paired with an industry, e.g. restaurants in Austin.
  • 5 industries: the local categories customers most often ask AI to recommend.
  • 32599 businesses: ranked in all, drawn entirely from what the assistants named.
  • 4 assistants: ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, and Google AI Mode, measured every week.

Where it comes from

We query the four assistants directly, from the perspective of a customer in each metro, and read their written answers. The businesses, the descriptions, and the recommendations all come from those answers, not from a directory, a scrape of map listings, or any third-party database.

The full method is on the methodology page: how the questions are built, how share of voice is scored, and how depth is graded.

What we publish, and what we hold back

  • Published: Business names, the descriptions AI gives them, share-of-voice rankings, and depth scores, all derived from AI output.
  • Held back: No phone numbers, addresses, or opening hours. This is an analysis of AI's understanding, not a business directory.
  • Sourced: Every page names the assistants measured and the run date, so any number can be traced to when and how it was captured.

Access the data

The full run is published as a single machine-readable file at https://index.getcourtyard.ai/data.json. It holds every market, business, ranking, and depth score in one JSON document, refreshed each week.

Every page also has a plain-text twin for machines and AI assistants: replace the trailing slash in any URL with ".md" to get the markdown version of that page.

How to cite it

Please cite the AI Visibility Index by Courtyard, with the run date shown on the page, and link back to the page you drew the figure from. For example: "AI Visibility Index by Courtyard, Friday, July 17, 2026 (https://index.getcourtyard.ai)."

Because the numbers change weekly, a citation without a date can go stale. The run date on every page is the anchor.

Corrections and contact

Every figure here reflects what the assistants said, so a page can look wrong when the AI is wrong about a business. If you run a business listed here and the assistants are describing it inaccurately, that gap is exactly what Courtyard exists to close.
